Newborn Session Client guide

What to Wear
What you and your family wear for your newborn session has a major effect on the feel and overall look of your images! Wearing neutrals or pastels reflects clean light onto your baby’s face and allows for the focus to be the beauty of your new babe. I have a collection of dresses available for Moms since the postpartum period can be a tricky “in-between” size time. Dads tend to wear light colored sweaters, button downs, or henley shirts paired with khakis or other light colored pants. Siblings are best in neutral or light coordinating colors. Delicate patterns and textures can add dimension but bold colors and patterns can be distracting.
My personal favorite outfit for newborns is just a diaper and a swaddle! This way they look (and feel) cozy while they are in your arms and hopefully we can unwrap them a bit to show some of those sweet baby rolls for solo pictures. Your newborn can be in a well-fitting special outfit or a simple white onesie. Most babies don’t love to be changed so I would start with whatever outfit is most important to you.

Prepping for your session
By the time your session rolls around, you may know a little about your baby’s preferences and schedule (but, real talk, it’s still anyone’s guess when they are that young). We want your baby to be happy (or better yet, sleepy) during the session. Generally, that means the baby has just had a full feed, a diaper change, and is in the outfit that they will be photographed in. If you are still working on all that when I get to your home, no worries. And if we need to take a break midway through to have a top-off feed, that’s ok too! I understand the world of newborns!
I recommend tidying up a few spaces in your home that have neutral walls, good natural light, and limited distractions. Sessions generally happen in the nursery, the primary bedroom, or the living room. I have been known to use a well lit corner of the house, as well!

A few Clerical details
Newborn sessions are generally held during the week within two weeks of the baby’s birth. Indoor sessions are generally held at 10 AM for the best light. After we have decided on a tentative session date I will send over a contract. I ask that you keep me updated on your little one’s status around your due date so that we can adjust the date if necessary. Payment is due in full ($900 + travel fees if more than 20 miles from Hollin Hall Pastry Shop) at the time of the session. Please make checks payable to McKinzie Jefferson. If you need another payment option, please let me know.
The gallery will be available three weeks after your session. The gallery will expire after 3 months- please download the images to your computer as soon as you can so that you do not run into trouble with the deadline. There is a professional lab associated with the gallery system, and this is where I suggest you order your high quality prints, especially large photographs. Mpix is also a good lab.
